  Chapter 8 deals with the idea of a non-idolatrous Christian eating foods of-
fered to idols (typically, meat from an animal that had been sacrificed to an
idol) at an idol temple.  Commonly, there was a room for religious sacrifices
and adjoining rooms where anyone might have a meal.

  It's not enough to know the idol is nothing (to not worship it--to not be-
lieve in it as God) and that Christians aren't given credit for eating, or
blamed for not eating, foods.  Christians should love God and take care regard-
ing those who don't know that there is one God, the Father, and one Lord, Je-
sus, and would, in worship, eat idol temple meat as a sacrifice to an idol.
Christians should avoid eating in that circumstance if they would be mistaken
by such others as encouraging worship of idols, idolatry, which would be a sin.

 

  In chapter 9, Paul writes that he has the freedom to eat and drink, and be
paid for his teaching, yet doesn't in order to gain more people to Christ.
Similarly, he becomes like those who follow Jewish law, or like Gentiles, when
around them in order to gain them to Christ.

  Chapter 10 starts with the example of those who followed Moses in the Exodus.
They ate the same spiritual food (manna supplied by God) and drink (water from
the rock which was Christ) (the JW's NWT probably uses "meant the Christ" be-
cause of Is.44:8).  Yet most were idolaters or immoral or didn't have confident
worship of God, and God was displeased with them so left them to die in the
wilderness.
